Update [December 12, 2014]: The man who died was identified as Union Grove resident Bretton Gimse, 21 years old.
Alexander, ND — An accident involving two vehicles left a man dead and sent two other to the hospital on Tuesday, December 9, 2014. The accident took place on Highway 85, about five miles north of Alexander, North Dakota.
Around 7:00 in the morning, a 21-year old Union Grove man driving in a car crashed into a pickup truck that had turned in front of it. Moments later, the car was hit by a passing work truck. The man inside the car was taken to a local hospital by emergency workers and passed away a short time later.
Two individuals inside the pickup were injured, although reports have not said how severely. The driver of the work truck was not injured.
None of the people involved in the accident have been identified. Police are continuing to investigate.

Reports say that the pickup truck turned in front of the vehicle, and that’s when the accident occurred. It sounds like they may have tried to take the turn too quickly, and instead should have waited for the car to pass. In a case like this, liability seems to be pretty clearly established, although there are potentially as-yet-undiscovered details that could change the way the accident looks. As for the work truck, it’s possible they could also be held partially liable, depending on the circumstances. How long had the first vehicle been in the road when the work truck crashed into it? Could the driver have avoided the collision? Often, accidents like this come down to a matter of timing. Hopefully the police investigation will be able to shed some light on what happened.
