Myersville, MD — Robert Craig was killed in a work accident that took place a construction site in Myersville, Maryland, on Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Craig was working inside a trench that collapsed, trapping him from the waist down in about ten feet of dirt.
Craig survived long enough to be removed and taken to a local hospital, but suffered from a damaged liver, as well as internal bleeding. Ultimately, doctors weren’t able to save his life.
The accident took place at a site in a residential neighborhood. Police are investigating, as what caused the collapse is unclear.
No other injuries were reported.

Work accidents are typically handled through an employer’s workers’ comp policy. Workers’ comp being a benefit system that provides coverage in case of on-the-job accidents. Part of the “agreement” workers make with their employers is that, in exchange for that coverage employees give up the right to file suit against the employer for any accident that may occur. However, that “agreement” doesn’t extend to third parties. Taking this accident as an example, if a third party were responsible for digging the trench, and it wasn’t done properly, the victim’s family would have every right to pursue a claim against the responsible party.
