Elkridge, MD — Six people were hurt in an accident in Elkridge, Maryland, that involved multiple vehicles, involving an ambulance, a tractor-trailer, a Hyundai Sonata and a Chrysler 300. The accident took place on Monday, December 1, 2014, at the intersection of Washington Blvd. and Kit Kat Road.
A semi trailer was turning left from Kit Kat to southbound Washington when it was involved in an accident. The truck came to a stop, taking up three lanes of the road. An ambulance traveling north on Washington crashed into the back of the Sonata before hitting the tractor-trailer. The crash pushed the Sonata into the Chrysler.
Emergency workers took an hour to extricate the driver of the ambulance before he was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in critical condition. At last report, he was listed in the stable condition.
The five others injured in the accident — one of them an 11-year old girl — sustained minor injuries. The accident is still being investigated.

Commentary
Liability for accidents like this often come down to a matter of timing. The law makes allowances for vehicles that are broken down or otherwise disabled, which I imagine the tractor-trailer would qualify as. But there are questions that need to be considered. How long had the truck been disabled before the second accident occurred? Could the truck driver have moved the vehicle? What caused the ambulance to crash into the side of the truck? Depending on the answers to these questions, liability could be placed on the truck driver or the driver of the ambulance. Hopefully the police investigation will shed a bit of light on what happened.
