Austin, TX — 18-year old Jermaine Dillard was killed when he was hit by a car while trying to cross U.S. 183 in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, November 8, 2014. The accident took place on late that evening, as Dillard was walking his sister home from work.
Reports say that instead of using a pedestrian bridge, Dillard walked through a hole in the fence to cross the highway. His sister was not injured in the accident. Reports say that the driver of the car that hit Dillard stopped and cooperated with authorities. Police have not charged him.
In the days following the accident, local residents have called for the Texas Department of Transportation to repair the fence along that stretch of highway, a job which falls under TxDOT’s purview. A TxDOT spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency had considered removing the fence completely. In light of the recent accident, it’s unclear if those plans will be carried out or not.
