Commentary:
I’m always somebody who gives a driver the benefit of the doubt when it comes to pedestrian accidents with kids. Children sometimes dart in and out of traffic chasing soccer balls in neighborhoods, and sometimes there is nothing a driver can do. However, on days like Halloween, I find lending the benefit of the doubt in these kinds of accidents to be much, much harder. I see from maps that this accident happened in a residential area, and it is no secret that on Halloween, these residential neighborhoods are filled with kids on foot, and sometimes wearing masks that hinder vision and hearing. While parents need to teach their kids about road safety, especially on days like Halloween, it is up to adults to take that extra measure of caution while driving in residential areas on a holiday that sees the streets teeming with children.
