WHITEHALL, MT — One man was rushed to the hospital following a single-vehicle tractor-trailer accident in Whitehall, Montana on Tuesday, October 15th, 2014. The news from KBZK said that the accident happened around 3:00 Tuesday afternoon.

Montana State Police believe a truck driver was injured when his tractor-trailer crashed on Highway 55. The report said the truck may have swerved off the road before over-correcting and crossing the lanes of oncoming traffic.

The driver was flown by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

Montana Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.

Commentary:

The news reports about this accident and the pictures shown at the scene paint two very different pictures. The reports say that the truck swerved back and forth, over correcting and crossing several lanes of traffic before it came to a stop, but the accident photos show the truck overturned and on its roof. Now, this shows us two things in particular: News stories about accidents like this are not always written with pinpoint accuracy, and that a second look is always warranted in these cases. Now, about the accident, just looking at the pictures, the cab is wholly crushed and overturned. This means that the truck didn’t only tip to one side, but completely rolled onto its roof. While many people think that these trucks are tanks just based on size alone, their construction is not nearly as robust as you’d think. In reality, these trucks are basically heavy base chassis with thin metal cabs on top. Its like building a paper house on top of a skateboard. Sure, the paper house is going to be okay when the skateboard head-on, but if the skateboard were to overturn, the paper house is crushed beneath its weight. Tractor-trailers are no different, and if the ramshackle construction of the truck made this accident far worse than it would have been had the truck been properly reinforced, then the truck’s manufacturer could be facing a ‘products liability claim’.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
