Commentary
News reports make it sound as if the driver of the box truck just wasn’t paying attention to the road, swerved off onto the shoulder and hit a car. But it’s possible that that isn’t what happened at all. It’s possible that the driver a completely legitimate reason for pulling off the road — there may have been something wrong with the truck — and the car just got in his way. If that’s true, then a piece of the investigation into this accident needs to focus on who left the car parked there and why. Leaving a car parked on the side of the road is unsafe for many reasons, not the least of which is because it can cause accidents like this one. It’s possible the driver of the car may find himself liable for what happened.
