Two Injured after Tuscola, IL Semi-Truck Accident Wherein Driver Fell Asleep

Douglas County, Illinois — Last week, there was a major accident involving two semi-trucks and a pickup truck along I-57, just south of the Tuscola area. Police said that a semi-truck driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed, causing another pickup truck and a semi-truck to crash as well.

This happened at about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday morning, October 9, 2014. A 30-year old man from Maverick, TX was driving a semi-truck north along I-57 that morning when he apparently dozed off behind the wheel.

Witnesses said his truck began swerving and veered off the road, into nearby ditch. His trailer blocked most of the northbound lanes of I-57. Moments later, a 69-year old man from Fordsville, KY came upon the scene and was forced into the median to avoid hitting the disabled semi-truck.

Finally, a second semi-truck crashed into the median as well, successfully avoiding the disabled semi in the roadway.

After police and paramedics were called, there were two people transported to hospitals, though it’s not clear which drivers were hurt. Police said that the Texas truck driver will probably face charges for the accident.

Commentary:

I wish I could say that I’m proud of my home state in every way, but there are a few aspects to Texas that give us a bit of a black eye. One of those things is our booming trucking industry, which has greatly expanded over the years to keep up with the drilling of new oil and natural gas wells. When businesses expand and the demand for truck drivers goes up, that often leads to the existing truck drivers being spread too thin. Truckers start driving long hours and end up fatigued behind the wheel.

I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but I’ve had my fair share of accidents in the past that have had remarkably similar fact patterns. If this driver fell asleep at the wheel because he was over-worked, I think that’s something his company should answer for. Ultimately, they’re the ones who are supposed to be monitoring the schedule and making sure their drivers are in line.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
