Greensboro, VT — John Ullrich was identified as the man injured when a piece of equipment fell off a tractor-trailer in Greensboro, Vermont, on Friday, October 10, 2014, and crashed into his windshield. The accident took place on Route 16, around 1:00 in the afternoon.
The piece of equipment was a metal bar used to tighten straps on a load. The piece fell from the moving truck — driven by Benjamin Morrison — hit the road, and bounced, smashing into Ullrich’s vehicle, shattering its windshield and cutting a 12-inch gash in the roof.
Ullrich suffered minor injuries and was taken to North Country Hospital.
Reports haven’t said whether or not charges will be filed.

Who’s responsible for this accident? There are two possibilities. The most obvious is that the company that owns the truck is going to be liable here. The piece of equipment in question is used in tying loads onto the trailers, so presumably it’s been used several times in the past. However, it’s also possible that the piece came loose because of some defect. If that’s the case, then it’s possible the equipment’s manufacturer may be held liable. It’s possible that discovering exactly what the problem was will fall outside the scope of the police investigation. In these situations, independent investigations can prove very valuable to victims of these sorts of accidents.
