Two Injured in Log Truck Accident on Highway 190 in Jasper, Texas

JASPER, TX — Two people were taken to the hospital following an accident with an empty log truck in Jasper, Texas on Wednesday, October 8th, 2014. The news report from KJAS said that the accident happened around 11:30 Wednesday morning.

Police think that two as-of-yet unidentified people were hurt when the car they were in was struck by an empty log truck on Highway 190. Authorities said that the truck pulled out onto the road from the Louisiana Pacific OSB Mill when it struck the passenger car.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where updates on their conditions were unavailable. The driver of the log truck was unhurt in the collision.

Texas Department of Public Safety Officials are still investigating the accident at this time.

Commentary:

The only thing we know about the accident is that the truck pulled out from the entrance of a mill onto a highway when it struck a vehicle. Now, I had a look at some satellite photos of the roadway on Google Earth, and if this truck was turning onto the main road, they should have had a wide-open view of both directions down the highway, and for a good distance. Furthermore, the victim’s car was fire-engine red, and given the 11:30a.m. time of the accident, visibility should have been fine. Moreover, the truck was empty and leaving a mill when the accident happened. Lastly, the news said that the car struck the rear tires of the truck, which means that the truck may have almost made it across the highway. All this tells me that the truck driver may have misjudged the turn because he might have been in a rush to get home after a delivery, or was hurried to get to the next job. If my estimations turn out to be accurate, then the trucking company should be staring down the barrel of some hard questions, as they should.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
