SAN ANTONIO, TX — Four people were taken to the hospital after a serious accident in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014. The news article from KSAT said the accident happened around 1:00 Tuesday morning.
Officials say that four people were hurt in a collision with a wrong way driver near the intersection of Stone Oak Parkway and Tuscany Stone. The accident happened when a Mazda 3 driven by 18-year-old Helena Ryals was going south in the northbound lanes before skidding into the median to avoid an accident. The car collided with a tree in the median before erupting into flames.
Ryals and another passenger were taken by EMS personnel in a helicopter to a nearby hospital. Two other passengers were also taken to the hospital by ground. Updates on their conditions were not available.
Police are trying to determine what role, if any, alcohol may have played in the accident.
San Antonio Police are still evaluating the details surrounding the accident.

Commentary:
First off, police have yet to confirm alcohol as a contributing factor, but wrong way driving is usually a pretty big indicator of an impaired driver. Very few people know this, but if the driver came from a bar or restaurant, these businesses can be held responsible for accidents that happen when they fail to serve within regulations, and the fact that the offending driver was 18 years old only adds insult to injury. It goes without saying that any bar that serves somebody below 21 is probably not firing on all cylinders, and if they broke the law by serving somebody underage, what other laws and regulations are they comfortable with breaking? Additionally, what message is it going to send to the bar if people don’t use the tools given to them by lawmakers? Will this discourage them from future behavior like this?
