Larose, LA — There was an accident late Wednesday morning of this week that claimed the lives of two men in the Larose area, police are saying. Lloyd Coleman, 62, was killed when his dump truck was in an accident with a pickup truck and a dump truck on Highway 24.
Also killed in the accident was Murphy Callias, 38, the driver of the pickup truck. The accident happened along Highway 24 at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, September 24, 2014. Coleman was driving his pickup truck east along Highway 24 that morning when he tried to overtake a dump truck in front of him.
As Callias swerved into oncoming traffic to pass the dump truck, he collided with Lloyd Coleman’s semi-truck – which was driving west on Highway 24.
The initial accident caused both Callias’ pickup and Coleman’s semi-truck to then collide with the dump truck. Police said that Coleman was killed immediately in the accident along with Callias.
The driver of the dump truck was only slightly injured.

Commentary:
I think it’s safe to say that the dump truck probably didn’t do anything wrong here. If the news reports are correct, the pickup truck driver appears to be the one who set the entire accident into motion. Now, a lot of people assume that commercial truck drivers are in a different class than most other drivers – and that’s true, to a degree. But in this situation, the drivers of the dump truck and the semi-truck are victims themselves of someone else’s careless driving. They have all the same legal rights to compensation that a normal driver would. Granted, their employer may have some workers’ compensation benefits as well, but the drivers themselves are (legally speaking) no different from anyone else in an accident.
