Dump Truck Accident in Enon, OH, Injures Man on Xenia Drive

Enon, OH — Emergency responders say that it looks like a dump truck shifted when it pinned a man beneath it while he was performing maintenance in Enon, Ohio, on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. The accident took place on Xenia Drive, around 5:15 in the afternoon.

After the accident occurred, a local man jumped in the truck and backed it up to get it off the man. Medics coming on to the scene were able to free the man by digging out the ground beneath him. Once free, the man was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital with serious injuries. His name wasn’t released. As of right now there’s no update on his condition, although reports say he was scheduled for hand surgery.

No other injuries were reported, and at this point what caused the truck to shift and come down on the man is unknown.

Commentary

There are a few details missing from news reports that make exactly what’s happened here a little unclear. The man seemed to have been working on the truck in front of his home, but it’s not clear whether or not he’s the owner. If he’s employed by a trucking company and working on the truck as part of his job, this seems like something that would be covered by workers’ comp, that is to say, an insurance policy the employer will have that would cover any on-the-job injuries and that sort of thing. It’s very possible, however, that the accident may have been caused by a mechanical defect, or something of that nature. If the truck slipped out of gear for example, then it’s possible that the manufacturer of the dump truck could be found liable for the accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
