Riesel, TX — An accident with an 18-wheeler left a 6-year old boy dead in Riesel, Texas, on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 6 and FM 1860, around 3:15 in the afternoon.
Witnesses say the accident took place in the middle of the intersection. The 18-wheeler apparently had a green light and the victim’s vehicle drove into the intersection and crashed into it. Authorities pronounced Conner Maines dead at the scene.
Emergency workers had to be called in extricate some of the children of the wreckage.
Two children, Alyssa and Brayden Maines, were taken to Baylor Scott & White Health Center in Temple, Texas, in critical condition. Carlie, the third child, and Conner’s mother, Ashlie Maines, were taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center. Carlie is listed in stable condition while her mother is in serious condition.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. His name has not been released.
The Riesel Police Department has already begun conducting an investigation, and are being assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

From what’s been reported on, it seems as if fault may lie with the victim. However, I can’t stress enough that a police report is not the final word in an accident like this. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen some detail in an accident like this go unnoticed or unreported, and which eventually changes the whole way things look. It’s certainly possible that that’s the case here, too.
