Commentary:
There are plenty of angles to inspect with this accident, but the thing that has me the most intrigued is the fact that a witness reported the condition of the passenger compartment in the truck after the accident. They indicated that the steering column had pinned the driver, and the roof of the cab had caved in onto the driver’s head. If this turns out to be true, then the truck’s manufacturer could bear a portion of the liability in this accident. How so? While tractor-trailers and freight moving vehicles in general are designed for towing capacity and not safety. The massive and heavy lower portion of a truck is often topped with thin and flimsy metal that has a tendency to cave in the moment any wight is added to it. In the event of a rollover, this flimsy metal often crumbles beneath the weight of the truck, and usually spells disaster for any occupants. If the poor design of the truck made things worse then they needed to be, then they need to be held accountable.
