Commentary
The way I’m looking at this, there are two sides to this accident. The driver of the car was cited for texting while driving, and rightfully so. When people are driving, their full attention should be given over to driving. However, I have to ask myself if the accident with the 18-wheeler wasn’t avoidable. There are two things that are going to make avoiding accidents out on the road — especially a busy road like I-35 — much easier. They are traveling at a safe speed and traveling at a safe distance from the person ahead of you. Both are going to help you stop in time to avoid an accident should something happen to the vehicle in front of you. Is it possible the accident would have happened anyway? It’s always possible. But it’s definitely something that should be looked at. This definitely wouldn’t be the first truck driver to make this sort of mistake while driving this early in the morning.
