William Sampson Killed on I-880 by Semi-Truck Accident in Fremont, CA

Fremont, CA — A semi-truck driver and two other vehicles were involved in a major wreck over the weekend in southern Fremont. Police have confirmed that 22-year old William Sampson was killed in the accident, but they haven’t released any other details about what happened.

Allegedly, Sampson was killed at about 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, after an accident between a semi-truck and two cars. It happened just north of Dixon Landing Road in the southbound lanes of I-880.

Police said that traffic was backed up in the area for some time. There were two other people injured in the accident as well, and the last update from police said they were in serious condition at a local hospital.

No other details were released and it’s not clear what caused the wreck or who was at fault. It’s also not clear what role Sampson played in the wreck.

Commentary:

This wreck happened near an exit ramp on a major interstate, so I can’t help but wondering if this accident was caused by improper merging. Whether it’s a driver who changes their mind at the last minute or simply didn’t see traffic until it was too late, there have been a lot of accidents caused by exit ramps that become congested in heavy traffic. When semi-trucks and 18-wheelers are added to the mix, things become a little more dangerous, in my opinion. You have truckers trying to move across several lanes of traffic to get to their exit lane and you have driver zipping in around them – a recipe for an accident waiting to happen. I won’t pretend to know all the answers here, but it looks like a lot more investigating needs to happen before we’ll get any answers.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
