Lorenzo Ruiz Killed in Alleged DUI Accident on Highway 71 in Bastrop, Texas

Bastrop, TX — An employee of the Smithville Times, which is owned by the Austin American-Statesman, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in an accident that took place in Bastrop, Texas, on Tuesday, July 29, 2014. The accident took place at the intersection of Highway 71 and FM 1209.

Suzanne Hodgson was driving a Toyota SUV along Highway 71 when she crashed into a truck being driven by Lorenzo Ruiz. The collision pushed Ruiz’s vehicle into the back of a semi-truck, causing it and Hodgson’s vehicle to burst into flames.

Ruiz was killed in the accident. A passenger in his truck was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to University Medical Center Brackenridge. Hodgson was also taken to Brackenridge.

Hodgson claimed that she was not the one driving her SUV at the time of the accident, despite police officers finding no one else inside the vehicle. Hodgson told police that earlier that day, she had consumed two beers. Despite the results of a blood test not yet being available, emergency workers responding to the scene told state troopers they smelled alcohol on Hodgson, and a doctor performing on eye test found evidence that she was intoxicated.

The accident is currently being investigated.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
