Jovanka Mijatov Killed in Car Accident on the Bishop Ford Freeway in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, IL — A woman was killed when the tire from a passing SUV came off and crashed through her windshield. The accident took place on the Bishop Ford Freeway in Chicago, Illinois, on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

The tire, from a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, bounced across the freeway median and into oncoming traffic. It collided with her car, crushing the windshield and roof. Emergency workers extricated the woman, identified as Jovanka Mijatova, and took her to Advocate Christ Medical Center with serious injuries. She passed away a short time later.

Police have charged Mariana Blanco, the woman driving the Blazer, with not having valid insurance and vehicle registration, as well as the use of unsafe tires.

The accident is still being investigated.

Commentary

Typically, in accidents like this, whoever is responsible for maintenance on the vehicle is going to be liable for the accident. It is possible for someone to be sold defective tires, or for the work done on them to lead to something like this. From the sound of the accident, the owner of the SUV just hadn’t been taking care of her vehicle. Of course, it’s always possible there was some work done on the car we don’t know about. That’s something that will come up in the police investigation. If that’s not the case, it sounds like the driver would be responsible.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
