One Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Interstate 80 Outside Echo Canyon, Utah

ECHO CANYON, UT — A two-vehicle tractor-trailer accident sent one driver to the hospital in Echo Canyon, Utah on Wednesday, July 16th, 2014, according to the news article released by The Salt Lake City Tribune.

Investigators believe one person was hurt when a tanker truck hauling cleaning chemicals collided with another tractor-trailer while driving on Interstate 40 approaching the Utah-Wyoming border around 5:00 Wednesday morning.

Scene of the Accident

The driver of one of the trucks was flown by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital where he was being treated for unspecified injuries. No other injuries were mentioned in the accident summary.

The Utah Highway Patrol is helping with the accident investigation at this time.

Commentary:

The main factor I’m curious about in this collision would be the fire that engulfed the trucks after the crash. While the regular cars meant for consumers out on the road are built from the ground-up with safety features, and crash survivability in mind, tractor-trailers are not. As a matter of fact, the majority of trucks you see out on the road feature an externally mounted gas tank right below the driver’s step side, right underneath the driver’s side door. These tanks often rupture in accidents, and if this is what happened here, the truck’s manufacturer could have a products liability claim against them if the facts line up right.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
