Driver Injured in Cement Truck Accident on SE 29th Street in Midwest City, Oklahoma

Midwest City, OK — A driver was hospitalized after an accident with a cement truck in Midwest City, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. The accident took place on SE 29th Street, between Douglas Road and Post Blvd.

Details on the cause of the accident are unclear at this point, but reports indicate that the driver of the car had to be extricated by emergency workers before being taken to a local hospital. There’s been no update on the driver’s condition and the names of those involved have not been released.

Authorities are still investigating.

Commentary

Pictures from the scene of the accident make it look like the cement truck collided with the rear-end of the vehicle. If that’s the case, there are really only two possibilities. One, the driver of the cement truck wasn’t watching the road, and two, the driver was following the vehicle ahead of him too closely. In either case, the driver would be held liable for the accident. And rightfully so. There are very few things we ask of people who drive for a living, but a big one is that they’re aware of what’s going on around them. Bottom line, accidents like this are going to be a lot easier to avoid if you’re driving at a safe speed and at a safe distance from the person ahead of you. If the cement truck is at fault — and it’s always possible that it isn’t — then hopefully the construction company is able to step up and make things right.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
