Royse City, TX — A young girl sustained second and third degree burns all over her body after being pinned beneath an ATV that exploded on Saturday, July 5, 2014. The accident took place in Royse City, Texas.
Keylee Latham had gone with three friends on an ATV to dump off trash in a nearby dumpster. While riding, the ATV flipped over on its side, pinning Keylee beneath it. One of her friends ran to a nearby house to get help.
The young woman brought back a man who decided that the best way to get the ATV off of Keylee was to hook the vehicle to his own and pull it off. However, a short time later, the ATV exploded.
The man and Keylee’s father were able to put out the flames, but not before Keylee sustained severe burns all over her body. She was taken to the burn unit at Parkland Hospital, where doctors are determining the best way forward considering her injuries.
She’s expected to stay in the burn until for the next several months. A fundraiser page has been created to help Keylee’s family with medical costs.

Commentary
From what I’ve read, this young girl was a passenger on an ATV that flipped over. I wasn’t there. I didn’t see the accident happen, so I really can’t speak to that. I don’t want to point the finger at anyone because, let’s be honest, accidents happen all the time. What I would like to look at is the explosion. That strikes me as odd because, typically, ATVs don’t explode when they roll over. I don’t know if you’ve ever ridden an ATV, but they’re designed to take a beating, and to go over some pretty rough terrain. Hence the name all-terrain vehicles.
Again, I wasn’t there, but I feel comfortable saying that something isn’t right here, because this sort of thing isn’t supposed to happen. There may be a simple explanation to all this. Maybe some fuel leaked out and was ignited by the heat from the exhaust. Maybe it was something else. In any case, I don’t think people should just write this one off, because something doesn’t sound right here, and I think the whole thing deserves another look.
