UPDATE: Charles Rogers Injured in Dump-Truck Accident in Oley Township, Pennsylvania

OLEY TOWNSHIP, PA — A major collision between two vehicles sent two drivers to the hospital in Oley Township, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, July 9th, 2014, according to a news report from The Pennsylvania Reading Eagle.

Investigators believe Charles Rogers was hurt when the vehicle he was driving on Route 562 around 11:30 in the morning Wednesday, was struck head-on by a dump truck for reasons currently under investigation while driving on Route 562.

Scene of the Accident

Charles Rogers was taken by paramedics in a helicopter to Reading Hospital where he was being treated for his injuries. The driver of the dump-truck was identified in the report as Scott Twardowski, who was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Pennsylvania State Police is helping with the crash investigation at this time.

Commentary:

Any time a commercial vehicle is believed to have crossed the center line of the road and caused an accident, I highly recommend a two-pronged approach to the investigation. One one side, taking a look at the driver, including his driving record and all the electronic devices in the truck along with him at the time of the crash. If the driver had a history of accidents, or was distracted by electronic gadgets and caused an accident, the trucking company could be on the hook for the accident. On the other hand, we always hear of news stories where a car manufacturer has issued a recall for steering lockups, brake failures, and sticking accelerators. If this accident was caused by one such defect, the evidence would be clear and traceable in the wreckage of the truck, and the truck’s manufacturer could be in some part faulted for the accident. A second look by trained eyes could tell us all this an more.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
