Two killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Interstate 10 in Acadia Parish, Louisiana

ACADIA PARISH, LA — A two-vehicle collision involving tractor-trailers left two drivers dead in Acadia Parish, Louisiana on Wednesday, July 8th, 2014, according to the news released by WFAB.

Investigators think that two people died when a tractor-trailer is believed to have crossed over the center line of traffic and struck another semi-truck while driving on Interstate 10 around 6:00 Wednesday evening.

Scene of the Accident

The drivers of both tractor-trailers died when the trucks burst into flames. No other injuries were reported in the accident.

The Louisiana State Police is currently spearheading the crash investigation at this time.

Commentary:

Whenever I see a fact pattern that illustrates a tractor-trailer erupting into flames after a collision, my first instinct would be to trace the source of the fire. Many of the tractor-trailers you see on the road today are built with a large gas tank mounted externally beneath the driver’s step just below the door. This is perfect striking distance for both small passenger cars and other large trucks alike. If one of the gas tanks on either one of these trucks burst, and made this accident worse, the offending truck’s manufacturer could be liable for the damage.

On the other hand, I’m also curious as to why the other truck crossed over, simply for the fact that trucker’s attention is often grabbed by the multitude of electronics, personal and otherwise in their vehicle. If one of the truckers was distracted, the trucking company could share the blame as well. Surely though, this is an accident that requires careful inspection and investigation.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
