UPDATE: George Landreth Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident in Midland, Texas

MIDLAND, TX — A hit-and-run accident left a pedestrian dead in Midland, Texas on Monday, February 10th, 2014, according to the news article from The Midland Reporter-Telegram.

Police say that they have reason to believe George Landreth was killed when he was hit by a vehicle when he was walking along or trying to cross A Street around 6:45 Monday evening. The driver that struck him did not stay at the scene.

Scene of the Accident

George Landreth died after the accident. The driver of the vehicle was identified in the news article as 20-year-old James Overton, who currently faces hit-and-run charges in connection with the crash.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Department is currently handing the fatal accident investigation.

Commentary:

With hit-and-run crashes, things can be difficult until the driver is found, but in this case, considering the alleged driver was captured, I highly recommend finding the whereabouts of the driver before the crash. Why? Because hit-and-run drivers come from two schools of thought for the most part. Either the driver was instantly terrified and reason lost out in the fight-or-flight response, or the driver had something to hide. If the driver had just left a bar, or nightclub, and drove off to avoid contact with law enforcement, the bar could be liable and punished right next to the driver.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
