Three Killed in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident on Interstate 80 in Tooele, Utah

TOOELE, UT — A collision with a wrong-way driver left a mother and her two children dead in Tooele, Utah on Friday, July 4th, 2014, according to a news report from Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

Authorities from the Utah State Police say that a woman and her two children were killed when a wrong way driver collided with the minivan they were in while driving on interstate 80.

Scene of the Accident

Three people were killed in the accident, although the news summary does not specify if they were killed instantly in the accident, or if they were taken by EMS to a nearby hospital where they died later on.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Paul Mumford, who currently faces drunk driving charges in connection with the fatal accident.

Commentary:

If this driver had recently left a bar, and was trying to get home, there could be what is called a third party dram claim against the bar. Third party cases happen when a bar either continues serving an obviously drunk person, or fails to refuse service to an intoxicated person who then goes off to cause an accident. I’ll keep saying it until I’m blue in the face, the only way bars will see drunk drivers as a liability is by holding bars liable for drunk drivers they fuel.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
