UPDATE: Modesta Lopez Killed, Four Injured in Car Accident in McKinney, Texas

MCKINNEY, TX — A single-vehicle rollover accident ejected and killed one driver, while injuring four teenagers in McKinney, Texas on Monday, June 30th, 2014, according to a news report from The Dallas Morning News.

Police think that 40-year-old Modesta Lopez was killed when the Ford Explorer she was driving is believed to have crashed and rolled several times while exiting Central Expressway at Wilmeth Road on Monday morning.

Scene of the Accident

Modesta Lopez was ejected from the vehicle and killed in the accident, while four teens, whose ages range from 14 to 17 were taken by EMS to area hospitals for treatment.

The McKinney Police is still investigating the crash.

Commentary:

In this instance, people may be quick to come down hard on the driver, because people predominantly blame the victim in this situation. While it is absolutely possible that this crash was caused by simple driver error, assuming so based on a news article would not be giving this accident the fair investigative shake it deserves. I’ve never come across a vehicle that was absolutely free of mechanical problems when I looked at the wreckage, and some of these vehicles were fresh off the dealers lot with under a hundred miles on the odometer. Now, whether or not the problem was in any way connected to the accident is another story altogether, but who could possibly know this until trained eyes get a crack at the evidence.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
