UPDATE: Carol Villanueva Injured in Car Accident in Kilgore, Texas

KILGORE, TX — One woman was seriously injured and a driver is dead after a single-vehicle accident that happened in Kilgore, Texas on Sunday, June 29th, 2014, according to the report released by KLTV.

Representatives in charge of the crash investigation have said that they have reason to believe 17-year-old Carol Villanueva was hurt when the car in which she was a passenger is thought to have driven off the road before vaulting into a nearby creek while driving on Highway 259 around midnight.

Scene of the Accident

Carol Villanueva was taken by EMS personnel to Good Shepherd Medical Center where she prematurely delivered her child. Killed in the crash was 19-year-old Luis Ocura-Torres, who was driving at the car at the time of the accident.

Police have said that they have reason to suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

Investigators hope any eyewitnesses that have not yet come forward will do so in an effort to aid investigators in better understanding the nature of the accident.

Commentary:

Any time I see alcohol become a factor in an accident involving teens below the legal drinking age, I cannot help but see a massive failure somewhere down the line. If these teens purchased alcohol at a beer or wine store that failed to check their identification, the store could be liable for the accident for their failure to serve alcohol safely and responsibly in accordance with the law. The same logic applies to a bar, restaurant, or nightclub if they came from one. Either way, this accident needs a very hard, close look at the finer details.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
