UPDATE: Octavia Watkins Killed After Being Flung from Car in DUI Accident in Crowley, Texas

Crowley, TX — Officials are reporting that Octavia Watkins, the 12-year old who was injured after being flung from the roof of a moving car in Crowley, Texas, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, has passed away.

Watkins and five other children were asked by Kisha Young to ride on the roof and trunk of her car after a trip to the pool because she didn’t want their swimsuits and towels to get the inside of her car wet.

Four children were injured when Young took a sharp turn and they were thrown from her car. Intoxicated at the time, Young didn’t know what had happened until a passerby flagged her down.

Octavia suffered blunt force trauma to the head in the fall, and along with the other children was taken to Cook Children’s Hospital. She passed away Wednesday night, June 25, 2014, around 11:30.

Young was charged with intoxication assault, and local news has reached out to authorities to see if those charges will be upgraded.

Commentary

Young isn’t the only person at fault for this accident. There were six children riding on the top of that car when the accident happened. Four of them Young’s, and two belonging to the woman who was inside the car with Young at the time. From what news reports have said, both of them were intoxicated. So, really, they’re both at fault for these children’s injuries and this girl’s death. And for what? All for a few drinks. The sheer stupidity is beyond explanation. Young needs to be held responsible. The other mother needs to be held responsible. People need to understand that there is not a single thing about this kind of behavior that’s acceptable.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
