One Injured in Fall Through Skylight at Wal-Mart on South Coulter in Amarillo, Texas

AMARILLO, TX — One worker was injured after a serious falling accident in Amarillo, Texas on Monday, June 23rd, 2014, according to the news report released by The Amarillo Globe.

Police think that they believe an as-of-yet unidentified 29-year-old man was hurt when he is believed to have fallen through a skylight and down to the tile floor 25 feet below him at the Walmart Supercenter at the intersection of Southwest 45th Avenue and South Coulter Street around 9:00 Monday morning.

Scene of the Accident

The worker was taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital where he was being treated for his injuries. The company he was working for is Design Air Solutions, and they were working on the air conditioning units on the roof when the man fell.

It is not clear if personnel from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is beginning their investigation.

Commentary:

The first big step in any kind of work claim is determining if the employer is a subscriber or a non-subscriber to workers compensation. If the employer is a subscriber, a claim can be started, but by no means is this an easy process. Often times the company will send you to a doctor that benefits by downplaying the severity and impact of injuries in order to further their business relationship with the employer. This is why leveling the playing field with somebody who recognizes these tactics can serve victims well.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
