Madison, ME — Two people were hospitalized when a flatbed truck collided with another vehicle in Madison, Maine, on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The accident took place on Route 148, around two in the afternoon.
The flatbed was traveling along Route 148 when a vehicle two cars ahead of it slowed down to turn into a parking lot. Officials report that the driver of the flatbed braked for the vehicles ahead of it, but the rear of his vehicle locked up. An officer with the Madison Police Department said that the front of the vehicle crossed the road’s center line and hit an oncoming vehicle.
The injured couple were ultimately taken to a hospital in Bangor for treatment.
Accident reconstructionists have said that the truck’s speed did not play a role in the crash.

Commentary
From what the authorities have said, the truck’s speed did not play any role in the accident. That’s good. The truck driver wasn’t speeding. However, it was his vehicle that collided into the victim’s, therefore he’s still liable for the accident.
The news reports have said that as the truck driver pressed his brakes, the rear of his vehicle locked up. That alone makes the possibility of mechanical failure worth looking into. If the truck locked up, why? Was there something wrong with it? Should the truck not have been on the road? Who was responsible for overseeing the truck’s maintenance? Is it possible they missed something, or neglected to do something?
With the accident playing out the way it did, these are some of the first things I’d be looking into.
