Two Hospitalized After 18-Wheeler Accident on Interstate 75 in Liberty Township, Ohio

Liberty Township, OH — An accident took place on Interstate 75 in Liberty Township, Ohio, on Monday, June 9, 2014. The accident took place around 2:30 in the afternoon.

Witnesses report that an 18-wheeler traveling down the highway lost control and slammed into the median. The cab of the truck went over the barrier into oncoming lanes of traffic and the truck caught fire.

The truck driver was pulled from his truck by a volunteer firefighter and a passerby. Emergency workers took him to Atrium Medical Center. In all, three other vehicles were affected by the accident. The driver of one vehicle that was hit by the truck’s trailer was taken to West Chester Hospital.

Commentary

There are two things that are important to look at in this accident. One is the overall safety of the 18-wheeler. Contrary to popular belief, 18-wheelers aren’t terribly safe vehicles. The cabs are flimsy and don’t hold up very well in bad accidents, many of them don’t have airbags and there have been several issues with fuel tanks lighting up and catching fire after an accident. Was the placement of the fuel tank a factor in this accident? Possibly.

The other thing that needs to be looked at are the accidents that happened as a result of the 18-wheeler. Whether it was due to driver inattention or some sort of mechanical failure, it seems as though the 18-wheeler is to blame for the accident, and as such, it would be held liable for the damage it did to both passing individuals and vehicles.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
