UPDATE: Ronnie Carter Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Warsaw, North Carolina

WARSAW, NC — A tractor-trailer crash that was reported in Warsaw, North Carolina on Saturday, June 7th, 2014, according to a news article from WNCT.

Investigators have said that they have reason to believe that Ronnie Carter died after a tractor-trailer he was driving crashed while driving on Interstate 40 around 9:30 Saturday night. The truck crossed the center line before striking a bridge column.

Scene of the Accident

Ronnie Carter was pronounced dead on the scene after the crash. A passenger in the truck was identified in the report as John Mueller, who was taken by EMS personnel in a helicopter to a nearby hospital where he remained in serious condition.

Authorities believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the time of the accident.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

The news states that the driver could have fallen asleep at the wheel at the time of the accident, which raises quite a few questions in my head. Namely, I’m wondering how long this driver was on the road, behind the wheel when the crash occurred. In one very recent, very famous case, the driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a fatal crash had been awake for 24 consecutive hours. If this driver was working far beyond his reasonable and safe limit of hours, the trucking company could be liable for the accident if they pushed him to make deadlines in the name of the almighty dollar.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
