BARROW COUNTY, GA — A driver has died following a collision with a flatbed tractor-trailer in Barrow County, Georgia on Wednesday, June 4th, 2014, according to a news article from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Georgia State Police say that 29-year-old Cody Brantley was killed when the Dodge pickup truck he was a passenger in was struck from the rear by a tractor-trailer for reasons currently under investigation as they were driving on Highway 316 around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Scene of the Accident

Cody Brantley was killed instantly in the accident. The driver of the pickup truck was identified in the news report as Richard Moore, who was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified in the report as Roger Bly, who was charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree and following too closely.

The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

You may assume that just because a truck-driver is issued a number of serious citations after an accident that the case is an automatic win, when in reality, there is no such thing when dealing with commercial vehicle accidents. These companies have decades of experience, and virtually bottomless resources in defending themselves in accidents just as serious as this one.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
