HANCOCK COUNTY, IN — A tractor-trailer accident in a construction zone sent two men to the hospital in Hancock County, Indiana on Thursday, May 29th, 2014, according to the news report from WISHTV8.
Authorities have reason to think that 26-year-old Willie Pittman and another construction worker were hurt when a tractor-trailer is thought to have swerved to avoid slowing traffic and collided with the workers, who were removing reflectors from the pavement at the time of the crash on Interstate 70.
Scene of the Accident
Willie Pittman and the other worker, identified by authorities as 36-year-old Mark Evans were taken to a local hospital after the accident where updates on their conditions were immediately unavailable.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as Daniel Kebebe.
The investigation is ongoing.
Commentary:
This is the kind of accident that has two theories competing in my head. On one side, we have construction workers on the job on an interstate, which makes me wonder if the work zone was clearly marked and coned off when the accident happened. If there was no such clear signage warning drivers of workers, then the construction company could be liable for the accident. On the other side of the coin, we have a tractor-trailer that had to swerve to avoid slowed traffic. If this truck was going so fast that it couldnt stop, or at least slow the vehicle enough to avoid the accident, or if the trucker was on his phone, the trucking company could be facing some hard questions in the coming days.
