One Killed in Dump Truck Accident on Interstate 77 in Surry County, North Carolina

SURRY COUNTY, NC — A pedestrian has died following a traffic accident that was reported in Surry County, North Carolina on Wednesday, May 28th, 2014, according to a news report from WXII12.

Investigators have reason to believe that one person was killed when they were struck by a dump truck on Interstate 77 just before 9:30 Wednesday night. The victim had just been involved in another rollover accident, and was struck after exiting the vehicle.

Scene of the Accident

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by local EMS and fire officials. No other injuries were outlined in the news report.

The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

I’d be very curious to have a look at the roadway and the placement of the vehicles in this accident. The fact that the news report illustrates that the dump truck had struck a vehicle that had overturned tells us quite a bit about the situation. Truckers are trained to keep the distance between them and the vehicle in front of them wide enough so that if that lead vehicle were suddenly to stop dead in its tracks, the truck has enough room to either stop, or avoid the collision altogether. If the victims car had rolled, and the victim had exited the vehicle after the accident, that tells me there was a long enough span of time between the rollover accident and the victim being struck for the truck to have avoided the crash. If the trucker failed to do this for any reason, be it speeding, distracted driving, or a mechanical problem, the trucking company is probably going to bear the liability in this accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
