PILGER, NE — Three people were killed in a major tractor-trailer accident that happened in Pilger, Nebraska on Tuesday, May 20th, 2014, according to a news article from JRN.
Nebraska State Police have said that they have reason to believe both Elaine and David Schmid was killed when the vehicle she was driving became involved in a tractor-trailer crash when one of the vehicles is believed to have run a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 23.
Scene of the Accident
Elane and David Schmid were killed in the crash, while it is not clear if they died at the scene or if they were taken to a nearby hospital after they crashed.
The investigation into the accident is currently underway by personnel from the Nebraska State Police.
Scene of the Accident
The fact that this accident resulted in such a massive fire tells me that this wreckage is worth a second look. You may be surprised to learn that many of the tractor-trailers that you see out on the highway have their gas tanks mounted on the side of the vehicle, exposed to the roadway and any potential colliding vehicle. The gas tanks in your run-of-the mill passenger cars are mounted inboard, usually beneath the trunk or rear portion of the vehicle, and are heavily shielded by a number of layers of metal. If this accident was made worse by the fact that one of these external gas tanks was damaged or ruptured in the crash, the trucking company or manufacturer of the truck could bear some of the liability for the accident.
