Lincoln County, KY — An accident between a school bus and a pickup truck has claimed the life of a man more than a week after it took place. William Coleman was pronounced dead Friday night, after the accident that took place on May 7, 2014.
The accident, which took place on Thornhill Lane, was caused by a school bus which swerved into oncoming traffic in order to avoid hitting another school bus in front of it.
After swerving into oncoming traffic, the bus collided head on with Coleman’s pickup truck. Emergency workers had to extricate Coleman from the wreckage. He was then taken by helicopter to UK Hospital.
Coleman’s funeral will be held at one in the afternoon this coming Wednesday at Green River Pentecostal Church.

Commentary
This was a tragic accident, made even more tragic by the fact that it was entirely avoidable. The accident was caused, as the bus driver claimed, because he was trying to avoid a collision with the bus in front of him. Why would he have collided with the bus in front of him? While, yes, it’s possible that the bus came to a sudden stop, the more likely explanation is that the driver was just following too closely. Unfortunately, because this accident involved a school bus, recovering any sort of damages is going to be extremely difficult. Victims of these types of accidents need to realize that, beginning with the moment of the accident, the clock is running against them. In Texas, the statute of limitations for an accident like this — involving a vehicle owned and maintained by a municipality — is only six months, and they’re pretty similar in other states. So again, victims should realize that in these cases, time is not on their side.
