One Injured in Gravel Truck Accident on Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — One driver was rushed to the hospital after an accident that happened in Corpus Christi, Texas on Tuesday, May 13th, 2014, according to a report from KRISTV.

Officials with the Corpus Christi Police Department have said that they have reason to believe one person was hurt when the vehicle they were in that was stalled was struck by a gravel truck while driving in the southbound lanes of the Harbor Bridge.

Scene of the Accident

The woman in the stalled vehicle was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital. No other injuries were detailed in the report.

The investigation into the accident is currently being led by officials from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Commentary:

The fact that this truck hit a stalled vehicle should raise some serious red flags. Whenever I see a tractor-trailer hit a disabled vehicle on the side of the road, I see a litany of failures. The first of which would probably be distracted driving. The accident is said to have taken place on a bridge, and I dont know about you, but I’ve never been on a bridge with steep curves that create blind spots on the road. These bridges are long straightaways, and the driver should have seen the vehicle if his eyes were on the road. Additionally, if the driver was speeding at the time of the accident, he may have seen the vehicle just fine, but did not have the distance to stop because of the speed of the truck. Either way, the trucking company needs to have some tough liability questions aimed at them.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
