Woman Injured in Accident with Dump Truck in Corpus Christi, TX

Corpus Christi, TX — A woman was injured in an accident involving a dump truck in Corpus Christi, Texas, Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on the Harbor Bridge, around 8:45 in the morning.

The woman’s car had run out of gas and stalled in the right lane of traffic. The driver of a dump truck, also traveling in the right lane, claims it didn’t have enough time to stop and collided with the woman’s car, overturning in the process.

The woman in the car sustained mild injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Two others in the car at the time were uninjured, as was the driver of the truck.

The accident is still under investigation.

It’s always possible that the investigation into the accident will discover something that no one’s noticing right now, so we don’t want to blame anyone without anything to back it up. But I have to ask, why wasn’t the driver of the dump truck able to slow down for the stalled car? It seems there are two possibilities. One is that the accident occurred right after the car stalled out and dump truck legitimately didn’t have time to slow down, the driver was following too closely to the car, or the driver just wasn’t paying attention. This last one is what I’m betting on. If a car is traveling at a safe distance, and at a safe speed, stopping in time to avoid a collision with the car in front of you isn’t going to be a problem. At the very least, you should be able to take evasive action and move into the next lane. I understand that, on a crowded bridge, that may not have been possible in this instance, but it seems the truck should have been able to stop. This is what I’d start asking questions about, right up front.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
