One Killed in Alleged DUI Hit and Run in Mansfield, MA

Mansfield, MA — An accident involving a box truck and an alleged drunk driver left a pedestrian dead on Sunday night. The accident took place at the intersection of Hope Street and Platt Street, around 9:30 at night.

Authorities report that after hitting the pedestrian, the box truck fled the scene of the accident. The same truck was reportedly seen later, driving the wrong way down North Main Street.

Hung Manh Ho, the driver of the truck, was arrested a short time later and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, as well as vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

The pedestrian was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital and died as a result of the injuries. The name of the pedestrian has not been released, pending the notification of family.

Commentary

The reports I’ve read on this accident seem to paint a pretty clear picture of what’s happened. And if the dump truck involved in the accident is owned by a company, and the driver involved is an employee of that company, then the liability should fall on them. Regardless, the company that owns the truck is going to argue that the driver went so far off the reservation that there’s no way they could be held liable for it. Of course, they have the right to make that argument, but I think many people may see it differently.

If I could say one thing about this kind of accident, it would be that these sorts of companies rarely have the victim’s best interests in mind after an accident like this. They’re potentially liable for a large sum of money, so they focus their efforts on trying to push liability onto the other parties involved.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
