UPDATE: Karolina Mora Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Lubbock, Texas

LUBBOCK, TX — Three people have died after a collision with a semi-truck that happened in Lubbock, Texas on Monday, May 5th, 2014, according to a news article from KCBD.

Investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety have said that 26-year-old Karolina Mora was one of the people that was killed when the van in which she was a passenger became involved in an accident of an unspecified nature with a tractor-trailer while driving near the intersection of FM 41 and Highway 87.

Scene of the Accident

It is not immediately clear from the news article if Karolina Mora was killed instantly in the crash, or if she was possibly taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital where she died a short time later. Also killed in the crash was 21-year-old Calvin Voneravong and 21-year-old Tyler Wagers.

Officials expect to release more information pertaining to the crash in the coming days.

Commentary:

This news article mentions that the van involved in this accident may have belonged to a nonprofit organization. When people hear the words ‘commercial vehicle’ usually the first things they think of are tractor-trailers and city transit buses, but this also includes small business vehicles like convention center shuttle vans, church vehicles, or painters trucks. While I cannot say definitively, many of these small-business vehicles go without maintenance or repair in order to stretch a dollar. Unfortunately the costs of repairs they are saving are passed on directly to victims of accidents these vehicles cause. If this vehicle is found to have been in poor shape, and the company knew about it, the company could be liable for the accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
