LAFOLLETTE, TN — A head-on collision claimed the life of one man and left another injured in LaFollette, Tennessee on Monday, May 5th, 2014, according to a news report from WATE.

Authorities have said that they believe 68-year-old Jerrold Packler was hurt when the Honda UEX he was driving is thought to have hopped over the median and struck a pickup truck head-on while driving on Highway 63 around 11:00 Monday night.

Scene of the Accident

Jerrold Packler was killed in the collision, although it is not clear if he died at the scene, or at a nearby hospital a short time later. The driver of the other vehicle was identified by police as Richard Jones, who was also injured in the collision.

Tennessee State Police are helping local officials with the crash investigation.

Commentary:

People will surely look at this accident, and blame the victim. Why this is, I will never know. I believe in giving everybody in an accident a fair shake, and stepping back and looking at this subjectively is the least I can do. It would be unwise to assume both of the cars involved in this crash were in perfect shape, with nothing wrong with them. That being said, is it really all that crazy to think that one of these mechanical problems in the cars caused the accident? If the power steering suddenly failed, the manufacturer of the car could be to blame if investigators find out that is what pushed the car into oncoming traffic.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
