Tillie Montoya Killed in Car Accident in Notus, ID, on U.S. 20

Notus, ID — A woman was killed and four others were injured in a car accident that took place just outside Notus, Idaho, last Saturday. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 20, around 5:30 in the afternoon.

Spook Meras lost control of his car while driving on U.S. 20, veering into oncoming traffic and hitting a car being driven by Eloy Montoya. Also in the car were his wife, Tillie, and two children. Tillie Montoya was taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where she passed away. Eloy and the two children were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident, and were also transported to the hospital.

Reports indicate that Meras was not wearing his seat belt when the accident occurred.

At this time, it’s unclear what caused Meras to lose control of his vehicle.

Commentary

The reports I’ve read on this accident haven’t provided a ton of details. At this time it’s unclear what caused the driver of the other vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic. How this plays out will largely depend on that. If I’m just speculating, and the accident was caused by driver inattention or something similar, then he would be held liable for the damages. It’s always possible that there was some sort of mechanical failure with the car. That sort of thing does happen, and more often than people think. However, going off the cases I’ve seen in the past, that isn’t the most likely scenario here.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
