UPDATE: Giselle Mendoza Killed in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident in Palmdale, California

PALMDALE, CA — One girl is dead after a car hit a house in Palmdale, California on Sunday, April 20th, 2014, according to a report from The New York Daily News.

Police have said that they have reason to believe 16-year-old Giselle Mendoza was killed when an SUV crashed into the private residence where she was sleeping sometime Sunday night.

Scene of the Accident

Emergency responders pronounced Giselle Mendoza dead on the scene when they arrived. The driver of the vehicle was identified in the report as Roberto Rodriguez, who currently faces drunk driving related charges in connection with the accident.

Authorities hope any eyewitnesses that have not yet come forward will do so in an effort to aid investigators in better understanding the nature of the accident.

Commentary:

Accidents like this are the ones that serve to underline the growing need for comprehensive liquor liability laws in states that do not already have them. For those that don’t know, liquor liability laws, or ‘dram shop laws’ govern the responsible sale and service of alcohol in businesses like restaurants, bars, taverns, and nightclubs. If the driver is found to have come from a bar in a drunk driving accident with a state with liquor liability laws, the bar they came from would be open for punishment right along side the accused driver.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
