Five Injured in 18-Wheeler Accident in Norwich, CT

Norwich, CT — An accident involving an 18-wheeler sent five people to the hospital on Saturday. The accident occurred on Interstate 395 in Norwich, Connecticut.

An 18-wheeler belonging to Cryogenic Transportation, Inc. didn’t slow down as he approached backed-up traffic. The 18-wheeler crashed into the back of a stopped car, which set off a chain reaction with three other vehicles. In total, five cars were involved.

Those involved were taken to The William W. Bucks Hospital and Hartford Hospital.

The accident is still being investigated.

Commentary

The accident is still being investigated, so there are a few things we don’t know, but reports said that the accident occurred because the driver of the 18-wheeler failed to slow down for traffic that had stopped in front of him. Typically, that’s not the sort of thing that just jumps out at you. For a driver to not only not notice that, but also get into an accident because of it, one of two things has to be happening. One, they’re not paying attention to the road, or two, they’re following too closely.

What will be interesting to see is how, in an accident where the driver of the truck is so clearly at fault, the trucking company decides to handle things. The minimum amount of insurance trucks like this have to be carrying when they’re out on the road is a pretty big number, so in an accident like this they’re on the line for quite a bit of money. So typically, they try and shove off as much liability as they can. An accident like this may be a little different, however.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
