OAKWOOD HILLS, IL — A single-vehicle accident claimed the lives of two men in Oakwood Hills, Illinois on Friday, May 2nd, 2014, according to the news summary released by The Northwest Herald.
Investigators have said that they believe 25-year-old Bradley Kass was killed when the vehicle he was driving crossed unexpectedly into the path of oncoming traffic while driving on West Rawson Bridge Road near the intersection with Ida Drive.
Scene of the Accident
Robert Kass was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders. A passenger in the vehicle was identified in the report as Robert Sloan, who was taken to a nearby hospital but died a short while later.
Investigators suspect alcohol played a part in the accident.
The investigation is being handled by officials from the Illinois State Police.
Commentary:
Many states have what are referred to as ‘third party dram protection’, which is where a bar can be liable if the customer they over serve kills or injures somebody in an accident, but in my opinion, this is not enough. Here in the State of Texas, we have what are called ‘first party dram shop protections’, that make a bar, restaurant or liquor store liable for an accident that kills or injures the person they serve. Many people do not agree with this and call it unfair, but to them I always ask, is it safe, reasonable, or fair to serve somebody fifteen shots within an hour before allowing them to drive away? Holding bars to higher standards is the only way to really curb a drunk driving problem facing the country.
