Commentary
The news reports I’ve read about this one haven’t been too clear in exactly what happened. They said that traffic lights in the area were blinking red and yellow at the time of the accident, so there may have been some confusion on the driver’s part as to whether or not he had the right of way. However, a pedestrian walking into the street when they’re technically not supposed to doesn’t give any passing drivers the right to hit them. They’re still responsible for avoiding accidents that are actually avoidable. If the driver had slowed down or was just leaving a light — and keep in mind I’m only speculating here — when the accident occurred, things only look worse for him. Drivers, obviously, need to make sure the road is clear before stepping on the gas, and that’s only easier to do the slower they’re going.
