One Injured in Accident at Gun Range in Midland County, Texas

MIDLAND COUNTY, TX — One person was taken to the hospital after a supposed firearms mishap at a local gun range in Midland County, Texas on Thursday, April 24th, 2014, according to a news article from The Midland Reporter Telegram.

Investigators currently have reason to believe that one person was hurt when he was struck by a bullet in the lower back at a privately owned gun range located between County Roads 1110 and 170 on Thursday afternoon.

Scene of the Accident

The patient was taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

Shooting guns is an inherently dangerous activity with the potential for great bodily harm and death, and gun range’s are supposed to be a safe environment to do so. This is why many gun ranges you walk into have waivers, as well as ‘range instructors’ that function much like lifeguards at a swimming pool, that do their best to keep the environment safe. The news article suggests that the owner of the range was not present at the time of the accident, which leads me to wonder if everything that needs to done in order to keep a dangerous sporting activity like this one was being done properly. If not, the owner of the range may bear some liability if this accident is found to have been preventable with just a little bit more foresight.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
