MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — One woman is dead after a serious tw0-vehicle accident that happened in Montgomery County, Texas on Sunday, April 27th, 2014, according to a news report from the Montgomery County Police Reporter.
Investigators have said that they have reason to believe that one person was killed when the vehicle they were a passenger in became involved in a collision of an unknown nature while driving on Highway 105 around 1:00 Sunday morning.
Scene of the Accident
The passenger in the backseat of the pickup truck was killed in the crash. One of the drivers fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later and identified in the report as Richard Compton, who currently faces drunk driving related charges in connection with the crash.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary:
Whenever I see a hit-and-run fact pattern, I see one of two things that could have happened. Either the offending driver was suddenly overwhelmed by a wave of terror, leading to a fight-or-flight response which caused them to speed off. Fortunately most of the people behind these types of accidents return to the scene mere minutes later to take responsibility for their actions. The other group of people tend to have more to hide. They are often fugitives, with warrants out for their arrest, or they are driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
If the driver is discovered to have been drunk at the time of the accident, finding out where the driver was coming from should be the next order of business. Why is this important? Because if the driver has come from a bar, and is fay over the legal limit, there is a very good chance that the driver was over-served, and the bar that fueled the driver would be open up to punishment right along with the driver. Once both drunk drivers and the bars that serve them are punished equally in the eyes of the law is when we have taken the drunk driving problem seriously.
